Interactive activities - Java applets
I seldom check out anything on the web without it leading me on to other sites! A student was having trouble loading the Whyville activities, so I went looking for solutions on the web. The first site I landed on was Project Interactivate which focusses on the development of educational Java applets. There are a number of activities available including these:
Clock Wise
Fire!!
Venn Diagrams and a Venn diagram shape sorter.
Arithmetic Four which practices basic math facts while playing a strategy game similar to Connect Four.
Tessellate
Simple Maze Game which involves the use of Cartesian coordinates.
I just selected a few that looked good but there are many more. A lot of them are focussed on Gr 3 - 5, but I think they are applicable for more grades than that. I found some that I can use at the high school level, too.
These activities are excellent examples of using technology to engage learners actively, in developing problem solving abilities, creating and testing hypetheses.

Basketball Math
Here's a site that provides students with a chance to build basic math knowledge. Basketball math allows students to "make a basket" with correct answers.
While it doesn't offer a constructivist approach, it is motivational for practicing some basic math processes. Some of the questions are difficult, but some like rounding, are quite straight forward.
I'm going to use this site with my Grade 9 class. They need opportunities to build skills, especially in math, before they get to Math 10.

Web Resources
This site is listed in Chapter 3 about using the Internet. I explored a number of the links and was very impressed with the quality of the websites included, at least in the ones I checked. I plan to use some of them myself. The range of themes is fairly limited, but for the themes that are here, there are some good sites and it will save teachers a lot of searching!
One of the themes was about web design, and I found this site for Native American clipart. It will be a good resource for my classes.
There are lots of themes related to math. I went into virtual manipulatives and spent some time with this one called Soma.
